Welcome to the American University in Cairo! You are about to begin one of your most
exciting and challenging life experiences. During your stay in Cairo, you will be in an
environment of different cultures, new people, new events, and new ideas; we
strongly recommend that International students reserve housing for the first
semester. Living in a student residence Hall makes it easy to meet new people,
and adapt to a new environment. Egyptian students from other cities or whose
parents live abroad and international students from around the world choose to
live in student residences where they engage in an active social and
educational program.
The American University in Cairo,
which will open its brand new university campus in New Cairo beginning fall
semester 2008, offers two excellent residence facilities for students. The first is the Zamalek Residence located in
one of downtown Cairo’s
most popular residential districts – Zamalek, and a brand new student residence
facility located in AUC’s New Cairo campus.

RULES AND REGULATIONS
The Office of Residential Life strives to create an environment
conducive to learning and personal growth.
We nurture this environment through encouragement of respect for the
rights of the individual balanced against the rights and interests of the whole
residential community. This is a challenging task given the diversity of
residents. All residents and visitors must conduct themselves in accordance
with Egyptian culture and in a manner not offensive to other people’s feelings
and conducive to communal living.
We expect that all members of the residence community demonstrate
respect and consideration for others and abide by the following rules and
regulations:
1.
The Office of Residential Life, in the interest of the
safety and welfare of student residents, reserves the right to enter a room for
any emergency or routine inspection and confiscate items which are found to be
in violation of residence and/or university rules and regulations (with or without
student’s attendance).
2.
Residents may be reassigned to another residence/room at
any time when such action is deemed to be in the best interest of the
residential community.
3.
Male and female residents are forbidden from visiting
residents of the opposite sex within the living quarters; except in common areas
at specified times.
4.
Residents are prohibited from entering another resident’s
room during his/her absence.
5.
Residents are responsible for locking their rooms in
their absence.
6.
Limited designated areas for smokers are available.
Students are responsible for indicating their preference
7.
No pets are allowed in the residence hall. Violation of
this rule may jeopardize the resident’s ability to remain in the residence
hall.
8.
Water pipes (hubbly-bubblies/”sheeshas”) and alcohol are
forbidden anywhere on residence hall facilities.
9.
Dress codes apply in ALL common areas. Students may not
go barefoot or wear pajamas, night garments, brief clothing, or bathing suits
in any mixed gender areas.
10.
Public display of affection, obscene language, excessive
noise, card playing in public areas, gambling and other disturbing behavior
will not be tolerated. Repeated warnings for any of these behaviors may lead to
dismissal from the residence.
11.
Curfew hours for residents are 10:00 PM every day except
evenings of holidays when it is 11:30 PM. Students under 21 wishing to stay out
after these hours or to be away on weekends must have parental permission. To
change the situation in this matter a written permission from parents is required.
12.
Excessive late returns will result in a formal warning
that will be reported to parents of students under 21. Repetitive violation of curfew in one
semester could mean dismissal from the dorm.
13.
Signing in and out after curfew hours is a necessary
security precaution for EVERYONE.
14.
Filling out a vacation form when spending nights out is a
vital security precaution for EVERYONE.
15.
Common areas, lounges, cafeteria and computer laboratory
(as relevant) have specific working hours, which will be announced and are
subject to flexibility due to academic needs and special events.
16.
Those who use residence facilities must abide by all
rules; otherwise they will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.
Dismissal:
The Office of Residential Life may take disciplinary measures against
any student living in or visiting university housing according to residence
Financial and Social Regulations and university disciplinary policies.
Residents who are dismissed for disciplinary reasons will forfeit their deposit
and the remaining semester housing fee and may be subject to further university
disciplinary action. In addition, violating the following rules causes
expulsion from the residence:
1. Behavior deemed
disruptive to community living.
2. Male residents
or guests are prohibited to be in the female section and vice versa.
3. No resident
should attempt to break any separator doors/gates.
4. Gambling and
drug use are illegal by Egyptian law and university policies. Individuals may
be subject to the intervention of civil authorities. Alcohol is prohibited both
on campus and in the AUC residence. See the Student Handbook for University
drug and alcohol policies and procedures.

or aggression against others will not be tolerated and are grounds for
immediate dismissal.
